The main ticket and information points are located at Burns Cottage (accessed via Greenfield Avenue) and at the main museum building (in Murdoch’s Lone). The two main sites are connected by Poet’s Path, a pedestrian walkway.

By car, it is served by the A77 trunk road, 40 minutes drive from Glasgow. There is a half-hourly train service from Glasgow to Ayr, where there is a local bus service to Alloway. Glasgow Prestwick International Airport is 8 miles from the museum, with daily flights to destinations across the UK and Europe. Both National Cycle Route 7 and the Ayrshire Coastal Path Network are connected to Alloway by short local routes.
