'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect', Kilmarnock 1786
- Robert Burns, Author; John Wilson, printer
- Object Number:
The first edition of Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect was published by John Wilson in Kilmarnock on 31 July 1786. 612 copies were printed and it sold out within a month.
The books arrived from the printer looking much like this copy. The outside covers were made of a lightweight blue paper and the inside pages were uncut. It was up to the new owner to rebind the book in their cover of choice and to have the pages cut to a uniform size.
Today, very few Kilmarnock editions retain this original appearance.
