Horn snuff box

Date:
1789
Object Number:
3.4043

Summary

This rectangular snuff box is made of horn with a lid on which is crudely carved the name 'Robert burns' in one circle and 'Ellisland 1789' in another. It may have been used by Robert while he lived at Ellisland Farm.

Robert Burns settled in the farm at Ellisland on the banks of the river Nith about seven miles north of Dumfries in June 1788, but his wife and family did not move in until the following year. The farm proved a failure and they moved to Dumfries in 1791.
