Wooden armchair which belonged to William Burnes

Summary

This rather imposing chair was used by Robert’s father William. Young Robert often stood by it and listened to his father’s lectures on his unacceptable behaviour.

Stylistically it is a Caqueteuse chair in the Scottish East Coast style. Prosperous merchants copied this furniture style from the Baltic regions and they were in turn copied by local Scottish craftsmen.
