Summary

While studying at Hugh Rodger’s school at Kirkoswald in 1775, Robert met many new friends. One of them was William Niven, a fellow pupil who stayed in contact with Robert for many years.

This letter, the earliest surviving in the hand of Burns, is written to William in July 1780 when they were 21 years old. Although the letter is difficult to read due to damage, it appears that Burns and Niven exchanged opinions regarding the nature of friendship.

Robert’s handwriting here differs greatly from the easily recognisable script of his later correspondence.
