Summary

Burns’s fondness for the common man is no better showcased than in Love and Liberty - A Cantata, sometimes known as The Jolly Beggars.

In this drama set to music, eight different character performers gather at Poosie Nancie’s tavern in Mauchline. They discuss life, love and loss in a raucous, drink-filled atmosphere.

'Life is all a VARIORUM,
We regard not how it goes;
Let them cant about DECORUM,
Who have character to lose.'

This is the only surviving manuscript of this work.
