MS: Letter from Robert Burns to Captain Robert Riddell, 27 September 1791

Robert Burns, Author
Object Number:

Robert wrote this letter to Captain Robert Riddell, his friend and neighbour while at Ellisland farm. Riddell, who lived at Friars' Carse, met Burns shortly after Robert's arrival there in 1788.

The two men shared an interest in old ballads, books, and self-improvement. Together they established the Monkland Friendly Society, a library society for the use of residents of the Dunscore Parish.

In this letter, Burns asks Riddell to purchase postage for him to send a letter enclosing a manuscript of The Whistle to Colonel Fullarton of Irvine. Burns also encloses a few stanzas of a new unidentified work for Mr and Mrs Riddell's opinion.
