Summary

Captain John Hamilton, leader of the Dumfries Volunteers, was Robert Burns's landlord while he lived at both the Wee Vennel and Mill Street. Burns was in near-constant debt to him, as his income from the excise was much lower than expected due to the war with France slowing imports.

Here, Burns sends this short letter accompanied by a five pound note to Captain Hamilton. The letter contains the details of Burns financial accounts and debts.
