Summary

This painting in oils by W.H. Midwood in 1864 depicts the betrothal scene of Robert Burns and 'Highland Mary' in 1786 reputed to have taken place in a secluded spot by the banks of the river Ayr. At the time she was a nursemaid to Gavin Hamilton in Mauchline.

Burns is shown handing over his bible and it is thought they planned to emigrate to Jamaica. Later that year having returned home to Dunoon she died of typhus in Greenock on her way back to meet with Burns.
