'The Auld brig of Ayr'
- Object Number:
This oil painting is of the Auld Brig of Ayr by an unknown artist. The Brig was made famous by Burns in his poem The Brigs o' Ayr. In the poem, Burns prophesied that the new brig would collapse before the old brig (dating from the 13th century). The poem comprises a dialogue between the old and new brigs which contains the line 'I'll be a brig when ye're a shapeless cairn' spoken by the auld brig.
The new brig collapsed in a flood in 1877 which left the old brig intact.
