Summary

The engraving depicts the funeral procession of the Poet from the Tollbooth to St. Michael's Churchyard in Dumfries. After Burns’s death, his body lay in state overnight in Dumfries Steeple (in the centre of the picture) before a long procession escorted his coffin to St Michael’s kirkyard.

The funeral of the Poet was a military burial and was attended by over 10,000 mourners. Sadly on this very day Burns`s widow Jean was at home giving birth to their ninth child Maxwell.
