Engraving: 'Mrs Burns, Widow of the Poet'
- G Cook, Artist; John Alexander Gilfillan, Artist
- Object Number:
The engraving by G. Cook depicts Jean as a widow in 1826. This was taken from an original portrait from life by Gilfillan. Jean survived her husband by almost 40 years, which were spent in Dumfries. The original portrait was painted from life in 1821, and was presented by the Artist to Dumfries Burns Club.
No early portraits of Jean survive - instead we have only Robert’s description of her as having ‘the handsomest figure, the sweetest temper, the soundest constitution, and the kindest heart in the county’, with a singing voice that was ‘the finest “wood-note wild” I ever heard’.
