Summary

William Burnes, Robert’s father, died at the age of sixty-six in 1784 following an illness exacerbated by ongoing legal difficulties regarding the family’s finances.

The loss was devastating to all members of the family, perhaps most particularly Robert, who at the age of twenty-five now inherited the responsibility of caring for his struggling family.

This silver watch belonged to William and symbolically passed on to Robert, the new head of the Burns household.
