Pair of dueling pistols given by Robert Burns to his physician Dr. William Maxwell

Robert, with his health still worsening, returned to Dumfries from Brow Well to live out his last few days. He died there on 21 July 1796.
These duelling pistols belonged to the Poet and were given to his physician Dr. William Maxwell (1760-1834) while Burns was on his deathbed.
Jean named her last child Maxwell, who was born on the day of her husband's funeral, after the doctor who had tried to save her husband’s life.
