Sunday Talk: Slavery and Freedom in the Life of Frederick Douglass

Celeste-Marie Bernier, Professor of Black Studies at the University of Edinburgh, will trace the life of Frederick Douglass, a 19th-century author and activist. Born into slavery, Douglass was reborn into freedom as the ‘Black Douglas’ out of the ‘prison house of bondage’. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Lady of the Lake’ in his search for a new surname, Douglass travelled the USA as well as Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England in a lifelong fight for social justice.
